How long it takes to build a website, and what it depends on

· 3 min read

What affects the timeline, what you can prepare in advance, and what each week of work looks like.

Typical timelines

How long it usually takes:

Business website: about 3 weeks
Redesign of an existing website: 2 to 3 weeks
Website with online booking: about 6 weeks
Online store: 6 to 8 weeks
Custom web app: 8 to 12 weeks
Mobile app: 10 to 16 weeks

These are timelines from the start of work to going live. The exact deadline for your project is in the quote you receive after a free consultation.

What it depends on

Mostly on what the website needs to do. A website that presents the business is quick. A website that takes reservations, sells or connects to software you already use takes longer, because each of those parts has to be built and tested.

The second factor is you. Texts, photos, a price list and quick answers to questions often decide whether the website is finished in three weeks or six.

What the work looks like week by week

Week one: a conversation, a page plan and the first design. Week two: building the pages and adding your content. Week three: checking on phones, small changes, domain, hosting and going live. For more complex websites this sequence repeats for each major part, such as booking or a shopping cart.

What you can prepare in advance

Three things that shorten the timeline the most:

A list of services with prices, even rough ones
Photos of the premises, the team and your work, in their original size
Your logo and business details: address, phone, opening hours, email

A website is rarely late because of code. It’s late because the text and photos haven’t arrived yet.

The short answer

A business website in about three weeks, a website with booking in about six. If you prepare the texts and photos before we start, the deadline is safe.
